This is the first major American museum show to focus on the decorative arts of the Austrian artist Koloman Moser (1868-1918), an often overlooked but central figure in turn-of-the-century art circles, whose works were exhibited at the Vienna Secession. Born in Vienna, Moser began studying art in 1885 at age seventeen. He quickly demonstrated a facility for the graphic arts and initially worked as a commercial illustrator for magazines, newspapers, and book publishers.

Koloman Moser: Designing Modern Vienna, 1897-1907, features over two hundred works by Moser, including his early designs for the Vienna Secession and the iconic decorative arts pieces he created while a member of the Wiener Werkstätte or Vienna Workshops. Moser designed both exhibitions and graphic material for the Vienna Secession and worked closely alongside other leading artists of the period, such as architect Josef Hoffmann and the painter Gustav Klimt. The show spans the entirety of Mosers decorative arts career, which is illustrated through important interior design commissions, graphic work and rare preparatory drawings, as well as important examples of his ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry, metalwork, and textiles.

This application features audio interviews with the exhibition’s curator, Dr. Christian Witt-Dörring, and commentary from the Director of the Neue Galerie New York, Renée Price.
